Problem. Within the Freeband program, TNO is exploring the application of ICT in the area of ambient, intelligent communication. For this assignment, the challenge was to design a music product/service that would use existing mobile infrastructure to deliver music content to teenagers over 'Personal Networks'. The assignment included the formulation of a business case for the proposed product/service.

The idea. Observing the current music consumption patterns among teenagers and university students, two profiles were isolated. The first profile consisted of users who actively searched for new music and had strong opinions and taste about genres and artists. the second profile consisted of users who were content with listening to good music and did not actively pursue new bands and artists. The second category of users generally depended upon the first category of users for their recommendations of artists and albums. Using this basic difference in consumption, a product/service was developed that put these two profiles of users in a symbiotic relationship. This 'swarm' of users described a self sustaining music discovery and consumption system that could be deployed and made profitable.

Probes returned by the research participants describing with pictures their current habits and attitudes towards music.
